Ebony is a very hard and heavy wood of black color with a fine structure.
It comes from tropical trees of the genus persimmon (Diospyros) from the ebony family. It is used for the production of furniture, musical instruments (or their parts such as fingerboards, decorative objects, marquetry or in carving.
The trees typically grow in the lower elevations of tropical forests, grow slowly and reach maturity between 60-200 years old.
All species have a very narrow, off-white white and a very dark, sometimes completely black core. The density of ebony is strongly dependent on the species, it usually reaches about 1000 kg/m³, but the range is very variable from 900 to 1300 kg/m³ and the wood can be submerged in water due to its density.
It is a very hard wood, difficult to work with, prone to chipping, but it polishes very well. Grinding dust can cause skin, eye and lung irritation.
Thanks to its fine structure, it can be polished to a high gloss without the use of additional preparations.
