Padouk is the wood of the tropical tree Pterocarpus soyauxii from the genus Pterocarpus, belonging to the leguminous family. This tree is found in tropical Africa in Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Nigeria and Zaire. It grows in tropical rain forests.
Padouk is characterized by a red color that turns into a shade of brown. Its hardness is high, but it is very easy to work. The pad is resistant to moisture and impacts.
Padauk wood impresses at first glance with its unusual color. It is deep red to red.
If we expose it to water (for example on kitchen equipment) it will turn brick-like to dark brown over time. Padouk has been known in Europe since the 17th century.
