Product description
Surface treatment of wood
If linseed oil is used in the surface treatment of wood, it dries slowly and shrinks slightly when it hardens. It does not cover the surface like varnishes, but rather soaks into the (visible and microscopic) pores and leaves a clear, but not glossy finish that shows the wood texture. Wood treated with linseed oil is resistant to dents and scratches, and is also easy to repair, but the finish is not as hard as modern varnishes, and the wood slowly absorbs moisture if left wet. Soft wood is protected against denting, but needs repeated application several times and also a much longer drying time compared to hard wood. Garden furniture treated with linseed oil can be attacked by fungus. Oiled wood can be yellowish and may darken over time.

The use of linseed oil
Linseed oil can be polymerized and this reaction is exothermic, a rag soaked in this oil can ignite itself. Due to these polymerizing properties, linseed oil is used alone or mixed with other oils, resins and solvents as an impregnating agent and varnish in wood treatment, as a binder for pigments in oil paints, as a plasticizer and hardener in sealants, and also in the production of linoleum.
