Grenadill or also false or Mozambican ebony, or babanus.
The wood is oily, durable, very heavy and hard. It is dark purple-brown or gray-brown (sometimes even blue-black) with black stripes. The white is narrow, grayish white.
It is mined mainly in Mozambique, Tanzania, and Sudan.
It is mainly used for the production of luxury furniture, for marquetry or carving. It is also very popular among manufacturers of musical instruments (e.g. clarinets or bagpipes).
